How to articulate your value at work ft. Wendy Pavey

by Elise Stevens

Pay rises, promotions and opportunities do not always go to the person who shouts the loudest.

Career progression relies on having a strong personal brand – being able to tell a compelling story about your career and communicate your value in a way that persuades decision makers to give you an opportunity.

In this podcast, Elise Stevens speaks with personal brands strategist Wendy Pavey about how to talk about your value and successes in a way that is graceful and not shameless self-promotion.

Points raised in this podcast:

  • To progress in our careers, it is crucial we communicate our value and persuade decision makers to give us opportunities.
  • Cultural hangovers mean it is often easier for men to speak up. Women can be more hesitant. People with English as a second language or who studied internationally can also feel that they have less value.
  • People will value you the way you value yourself.
  • In casual conversations or networking settings, try to create a warm, reciprocal exchange with the goal of making the other person feel good about themselves and then let the conversation flow back to you naturally.
  • In a formal setting or interview, you need to be clear and specific about your skills, achievements, and value.
  • Finding a time to ask your manager about how they see your value can ensure you’re on the same page. Perhaps others don’t see a lot of value in the work you’re doing.
  • Discovering there is a gap between how you and your employer view your value can be discouraging but is also an opportunity to find out why. Having the difficult conversation may help change or open their mind.
