Incorporating feedback into your leadership style

In this podcast, change management consultant Gillian Klette talks to me about incorporating feedback into your leadership style.

Gillian has more than 20 years experience in change management and project management, most recently with Queensland Urban Utilities and Oakton and previously with the Queensland Department of Tourism, Major Events, Small Business and the Commonwealth Games, Queensland Treasury Corporation and the Bank of Queensland.

She is focused on change as it relates to people, including changes to business processes, systems and technology, job roles and organisation structures and provides coaching on emotions management, resilience, turning negatives into positives, breaking old habits, identifying and removing blockages and confidence, courage and determination.

Points raised in this podcast:

  • Project managers can often struggle to give good feedback.
  • Asking for feedback yourself takes emotional intelligence and maturity. It can be challenging, but it can also influence others around you to do the same.
  • Feedback is rarely a priority for project managers and is often sidelined by the task at hand.
  • A culture and framework for feedback should ideally filter through all areas of an organisation.
  • Feedback can often be misinterpreted as favouritism if a culture of feedback is not established.
  • Feedback should be a two-way communication. The leader of a team or organisation is not the only person that can give feedback and team members should be encouraged to give feedback to their superiors.
  • Not all feedback has to be delivered formally.
  • Adjust your feedback to your own personal style to ensure you appear authentic and don’t come across as condescending or insulting.
  • Sharing positive comments at the same time as constructive criticism can be the most tactful way of incorporating feedback into your leadership style.
  • Make clear your intention is to help and not to hurt.
