What is your project management super power?

My project superpower is my sales background – learning to listen or identify the issue(s) and then find a solution that works for the client and being flexible with the solution.

How can gender diversity be improved in the project management profession?

By encouraging more flexible workplaces – long gone are the 8am-5pm roles, the ‘if you aren’t in the office, you aren’t working’ approach and allow people to do their best. Women are productive with very little resources – business ignore this at their peril.

As the profession evolves, what skills do you think will be key for future success?

More leadership and communication skills that can only be learnt in the field. Experience in conflict and resolution as well as being a connector of people and resources.

How do you recover from difficult situations?

I stop, breathe and decide how to move forward. Is it about client issues or team issues that will ultimately affect the client? I put things down on paper, discuss with others and then determine a way forward or backward if that’s what is needed to resolve.

What are your tips and techniques for conflict resolution?

Listen, listen and listen some more. Don’t rush in with solutions. Sometimes I do let my enthusiasm for getting things done overtake the moments when I shouldn’t rush, usually I am ok, provided I have listened first!

Which 3 words best describe why you enjoy being a project manager?

There is a START, a MIDDLE and a FINISH.

I’ve also realised later in life that I enjoy the process of a start, a middle and a finish and that not everyone has to be in it for the long haul. Variety is the spice of life!
