Initially an ‘accidental’ project manager, I’ve delivered multiple complex projects in the notoriously complex university context. I formalised that experience in a Masters Degree in Project Management graduating in 2015. In that same year I won the AIPM Queensland 2015 Project Manager of the Year Award and have also received multiple awards from the Association of Tertiary Education Management. Constantly seeking after new challenges and new knowledge, I am now working towards a PhD.
For fun I like to sing and I sew and knit for community programs. I also find my annual voluntary missions-focussed work in Vanuatu particularly rewarding.
What is your project management super power?
Capacity to grasp the complex power relations and navigate my way through them.
How can gender diversity be improved in the project management profession?
Women need to promote women! This initiative is a really good move in that direction. My participation in the 2020 Telstra Business Women of the Year Awards is one of the ways I am trying to also positive affect this (shortlisted and awaiting results).
As the profession evolves, what skills do you think will be key for future success?
Critical and reflective thinking; the highest levels of emotional intelligence; leadership (of self and others); capacity to deal with ambiguity and complex problems; capacity to synthesise and write well!
How do you recover from difficult situations?
Reflection, pausing and resting.
What are your tips and techniques for conflict resolution?
Call it out early and deal with it early. Call in an independent third party if required.
Which 3 words best describe why you enjoy being a project manager?
delivery, solutions, positive-change
