Bio:

Started out as second level support, then release management… both were hard roles for an introvert. After that I was asked to be a Project Manager, huge learning curve but with several great mentors and colleagues I learned alot. Became PMO lead. A need for master scheduler arose so more learning. And now I have the privilege of helping others so the learning curve for them wont feel so steep.

What is your project management super power?

The ability to spread the crazy, with specific focus on high stress projects… who doesn’t need a laugh to break an otherwise intense stressful day? But of course one needs to couple the crazy with genuine care. As a PMO person, who better to offer comic relief, along with insights into the quagmire of data that beckons interpretation.

How can gender diversity be improved in the project management profession?

By not noticing gender, but each individual. Project Management profession draws more males by nature. That is not an issue until we concern ourselves with treating genders differently. I chose to be crazy and caring to everyone.

As the profession evolves, what skills do you think will be key for future success?

The more we recognise that Project Management (or management of any kind for that matter) is about leading, inspiring, and caring, about individuals, humans, people, it will be less about success and more about promoting living.

How do you recover from difficult situations?

By reminding myself that 99% of situations in my life are good, by aiming not to let that one situation cloud the rest of my life. Easier said than done, I know, but it never hurts to keep reminding myself every day of all the good things. P.S. Having a whinge to a wiser person helps a lot.

What are your tips and techniques for conflict resolution?

The first thing is to look beyond the conflict. Is there an underlying reason for this conflict? Is the person/team upset about something else? Is the person/team generally reasonable? Assuming that 99% of people are worthy of respect, this warrants reacting less to the surface tension and trying to appease root cause. People appreciate genuineness and concern.

Which 3 words best describe why you enjoy being a project manager?

“SERVICE AS NEEDED”
