Heike Cantrup found her passion for IT in 1998 while taking a post graduate computer programming course. Technical coding was the avenue to realizing that managing people and supporting them to success was based on promoting individual strengths within a team based environment.
Women in project management/IT are the key to any successful initiative given their strategic approach to problem solving and ability to bring groups of people together. Coaching women is her next career projected pathway, which she has been inherently doing since her humble beginnings as a technical facilitator. She has two children and loves to stay fit through exercise and a balanced diet.
What is your project management super power?
Bringing reluctant team members together successfully working towards a common goal.
How can gender diversity be improved in the project management profession?
Understanding that soft skill development is much more important than technical prowess. I believe that women have a more natural capacity for apply ‘just enough process’ vs. having to follow all the prescribed stage gates found within traditional project management.
As the profession evolves, what skills do you think will be key for future success?
Women helping other women to succeed and mentor/coach on strategies that work.
How do you recover from difficult situations?
Reflect upon the scenario with people you trust. Ensure that a response is not emotionally fuelled and separate your desire to respond and taking the time to respond with grace.
What are your tips and techniques for conflict resolution?
Recognize that everyone has skills that they bring to the table. Allow everyone their stage to air out grievances. Engage resources for their experience and tenure and help them see how to share that knowledge will elevate everyone.
