What is your project management super power?
Building relationships! The greatest projects accomplishments have been a result of building a relationship with the people I work with. The project team is just that – a team! Taking a little extra time to get to know the people you work with is key. When project is in crunch time it makes it a bit easier to get everyone on board.
How can gender diversity be improved in the project management profession?
Honestly, I truly believe I have seen great leaps in gender diversity within the industry. When I connect with other professionals I am always pleased to see more women and black women in project management and specifically within technology.
As the profession evolves, what skills do you think will be key for future success?
We are living in a digital age and grasping knowledge around digital marketing, programming, or similar fields would serve well. You do not have to be an expert, but having general knowledge in areas of technology is great to have. The beauty of project management is our standard practices can translate across industries. You can add onto those practices obtaining certifications as a scrum master, kanban and/or agile safe to really tap into the technology space.
How do you recover from difficult situations?
By centering myself and finding the learning lesson in adversity. Whether it is a difficult project or personal matter, I always try to find the silver lining. I ask myself, “although this circumstance is not unfolding the way I would like what can I learn from this?” That lesson I can then apply later to grow and learn new things within my career and life.
What are your tips and techniques for conflict resolution?
Communication is the best way to resolve conflict. With so many mediums of communication (IM, email, phone calls) things can get lost in translation. The best way to reach resolution is to discuss one on one and best accomplished in-person, if possible.
Which 3 words best describe why you enjoy being a project manager?
Teamwork, Leadership, Organization.
