Valeria is an engineer with less than 10 years of experience in project management and leadership but very enhanced from this role and duty, spanning the building, medical, logistic and consulting industries. Born and raised in Italy, attended LA SAPIENZA University in Rome. After earning her bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Valeria followed the Master degree to detail the experience in management and design of renewable sources at buildings’ service. Started her career in the mechanical industry, where she led projects from the cultural and social users to the design of hydraulic and fire-fuel system components for commercial and military aircraft areas with experiences in Italy and abroad.

Valeria then transitioned into the engineering consulting industry with 3Ti Progetti first and Hill International later on, where she led and managed multidisciplinary design teams for airport, health care centers, educational halls, retail development and logistic sizing for masterplan expansions, specilizing and living for almost five years in the rules and standards of the Arabian Gulf areas.

Most recently, Valeria came back in Italy and started a collaboration with Lombardini22, first consultancy firm in Italy as nowdays, leading multidisciplinary design projects in the private and municipal sector. Valeria is a licensed Professional Engineer in Italy, integrating to the same as per Italian law two specialization courses in Health and safety for the sites and the Fire engineering analysis. She enjoys spending time with family and friends and the favorite past-times include trekking, camping, painting. Valeria is also a frequent visitor to the art centers in teh city, the Hippodrome, Theatre and concerts events. Valeria is also the International manager and business developer for the Italian-african brand GRETA TULIPANI founded with the stylist Emanuela Mura in the late 2013 as organizational charity programme for the employment of the african women in the Senegal and Cape Vert areas.

What is your project management super power?

Multitasking, communication power and a good memory

How can gender diversity be improved in the project management profession?

The question is… are the men ready to be dealt (not ordered, not managed, not conducted) by a woman? And are they ready to allow this to one younger of them, professionally and personally. This has been my main concern in my sector, where the male presence is a fact, a stated fact, and so i think that the only way to improve this is to do more team work. As much as the differences are evident when you work in singularity, less are highlighted and intense if you work in a team. An office and working way of saying “sharing is caring” :o) .

As the profession evolves, what skills do you think will be key for future success?

The new skills is going to be in my opinion in a multidisciplinary direction approached with a clinical psychological analysis; the PM is already known as a figure where the psycho and moral effects of their actions influences the conduction of the project so neither the less the stability of the relations and the success of the client satisfactions.

How do you recover from difficult situations?

Well, psychological is frustrating when you realize “o yeah i should have done this and that”; lesson learned is the chapter i loved more from the PMI education. Collecting the bad experiences and as well analysing as they sorted out is where i find inspiration for the new difficult ones.

What are your tips and techniques for conflict resolution?

The method i use to propose is always the same: “what about if we look into the solution of going to do less work with the major benefits for all the stakeholders?”. Let’s see what is the minimum we can save from this conflict and re propose it for gaining a benefit.

Basically again i am here to look at my team and ask for the 360 opinions and then use few tips to select the resolution one:
– make all happy
– make less work and effort
– not deviate from the main goal

All the above with the good use of the sixth sense which suggest me how to avoid the escalation of uncomfortable situations.

Which 3 words best describe why you enjoy being a project manager?

Management. Balance. Duty.
I enjoy to keep all well organised and be able to manage them, as well to contain and control the unpredictable.
I enjoy the balance this method teaches me in life as well.
I sense my duty, and i love it.
